Italian

Italians make up the fourth largest ethnic community in the Greater Cleveland area. In the 1870s, Italian immigrants were primarily laborers, tradesmen, merchants and professionals. Because of their skills working with stone and metal, they were recruited from small villages in central and southern Italy by steamship agents to build Cleveland’s railroads, bridges and roads. The first large Italian community was known as Big Italy and was located along Woodland Avenue from Ontario and Orange Avenues to East 40th Street. By the 1920s, other smaller communities arose in the city. Today, Little Italy near University Circle is Cleveland’s most recognizable Italian community and a popular destination for art lovers and diners. Authentic Italian cuisine is served at several restaurants, including Mama Santa’s Pizzeria, Guarino’s and Trattoria Roman Garden. In July, Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s Festival includes Italian food, music, rides and games. Each August, the Holy Rosary Church in Little Italy sponsors the popular and well-known Feast of the Assumption celebration featuring music, food, rides and fireworks.
